Nike Club Run Recognized

Even if physical fitness has never been your thing, it's never too late to begin a program. Walking, running, swimming, playing tennis -- whatever gets you off the couch and outside breathing fresh air, now's the time to force the action. It just so happens that there is an ongoing training program available locally that anyone can join.

Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned athlete, Team in Training will prepare you to run or walk in any marathon or half marathon. Danville resident Karen Kaminishi brought to my attention that Nike kicked off its Nike Club Run San Francisco local training program July 8 at the Danville Town Green, 420 Front St. (in front of the Danville Library). More than 300 walkers and runners enjoyed free Nike shoe trials, smoothies, mini-massages and pedicures. Each Sunday beginning at 8 a.m., for the next 12 weeks, anyone may join in, whether you are marathon training or not. Even babies pushed in strollers are welcome. Pace leaders will be on hand to provide encouragement. There will also be free giveaways as well as manned aid stations along the routes providing drinks and nutritional snacks. Women and men, young and old, have signed up to get fit and train for the Nike Marathon and Half Marathon, slated for Oct. 21 in San Francisco's Union Square. If you are an avid runner, there's a chance you have already registered for the popular San Francisco marathon. Nike is also sponsoring the first-ever Nike+ Women's Half Marathon, a 13.1-mile run on the same day. Run together with 15,000 other women benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Come check out Danville's training program or email Jodi Dailey at nikeclubrunsf@gmail. An official finisher necklace designed by Tiffany & Co. will be presented to all women who complete the race. Participants will also receive a Nike Dri-Fit T-shirt and have access to a two-day interactive Expotique in Union Square. Extraordinary on-course support and entertainment will line the streets as well as a postrace celebration at the finish line, including free massages, food and music. Not planning on running? That's great, too ...Spectators are encouraged to attend. Transportation from Union Square to the finish line will be available for a $15 fee. Or, join Nike on race weekend as a volunteer. If you have waited too long to sign up, the event needs thousands of volunteers to staff the aid stations, work the Expotique and offer support to the runners at the start and finish. Sign up at http://www.impex.com/nike or e-mail Nike@TriCalifornia.com. All volunteers will receive an official race volunteer T-shirt.
